| In this section: | The first important step is to know yourself and what you want. Identify your strengths and areas for development. Be realistic - you will not be happy trying to be someone you are not! | |
| A
very important step is that of CV preparation:- It must be easy to read and convey a picture of you initially through a two minute read. The CV should be no longer than three pages maximum. Start off with current or last appointment. Sum up the company you work for in one sentence i.e. markets, products, turnover, number of employees. Sum up your job in one/two sentences, i.e. responsible for people, products, budgets etc. Concisely describe 3/4 key achievements - what you have contributed to the business/bottom line! Remember, in these days of lean organisations there is only room for those who can make it happen! |
||
| Make sure you are easily contactable - put a phone number on your CV. You would be surprised at the number of candidates who are ex directory and never supply their telephone number. Have you got an answerphone? Mobile, etc.? | ||
| Work on your interview presentation - you only get one chance - do not ramble - be precise/concise. Know yourself - strengths/weaknesses/behavioural style. | ||
| Identify skills shortages and do something about them. Keep yourself marketable by constant learning/new skills. Change is here to stay. | ||
| Personal presentation at interview - look at yourself in the mirror - use the right packaging to create the right impression. | ||
| Lead recruiters - what are you looking for, type of job, sector, location, salary level etc. | ||
| Always give either your last salary or a range you would feel happy with. This helps recruiters to match you with the right level of appointment. It is unlikely that you will jump from £50K to £100K! | ||
| Think carefully about yourself and your next job. What is really important to you? What are you looking for in your next move? Put this information in an envelope and when you have a job offer read these notes carefully. Ask yourself - is this job on offer really what I am looking for - do not jump out of the frying pan into the fire! | ||
| The right job for you will come along - it is a question of time. The average job search time is about 6 months. | ||
| The recruitment process takes longer than you think, companies can be slower to make decisions than expected - be patient. | ||
| You need to work at it - numbers game/network. The more bread on the water, the more nibbles you are likely to get. | ||
| Finally, be positive: It will happen! |
